In the midst of the holiday season's whirlwind, there's a tradition my dear friend Sara and I hold sacred - our annual holiday shopping trip to Essex, Connecticut. It's our time to escape the daily grind, immerse ourselves in the enchanting charm of this New England town, and indulge in the warmth of the season. This year, we decided to elevate the experience by staying at the River Barn, and it was a decision that added a touch of magic to our tradition.

The River Barn: A Quaint Retreat

Before delving into the shopping escapades, let me paint a picture of our wonderful accommodations. The River Barn, nestled in Essex, CT, is a delightful renovated barn that effortlessly blends modern comfort with historic charm. The moment we walked through the door, we were greeted by the warm and inviting atmosphere. It felt like we had stepped into a winter wonderland, complete with festive decorations and a cozy fireplace.

Our room was an epitome of comfort, featuring a plush bed that promised restful nights and a private en-suite bathroom that exuded old-world elegance. The attention to detail was impeccable, and it was evident that the River Barn was a labor of love.

The Shopping Extravaganza Begins

Our holiday shopping adventure in Essex marked the heart of our journey. Main Street, aglow with twinkling lights, set the stage for our festive expedition. Wrapped in warm scarves and gloves, we ventured out to explore the charming boutiques, art galleries, and specialty stores.

Essex, as we soon discovered, is a treasure trove of unique gifts and handcrafted items, making it a haven for holiday shoppers. Whether it was locally crafted jewelry, artisanal chocolates, or handmade candles, we stumbled upon delightful presents for our loved ones.  Among our personal favorites were Weekend Kitchen, River Lane (where we couldn't resist a special treat for ourselves!), J Alden and the Griswold Inn Store, a fantastic little gift shop that could easily occupy an hour of your time.

A True Winter Wonderland

As we meandered through the streets, the snowy landscape around us felt like a scene from a holiday movie. Essex's historic town center, dating back to the 18th century, added to the magical ambiance. We snapped photos of colonial architecture blanketed in snow, and the images were as charming as any holiday card.

Evening Magic and Culinary Delights

As the day's successful shopping spree came to an end, we returned to the inviting embrace of the River Barn, our arms laden with the treasures we'd discovered. Amidst its festive decorations, the ambiance encouraged us to nestle by the fireplace and savor hot cocoa. Here, we shared our tales of adventure, exchanged laughter, and reveled in the warmth of friendship.

Our Essex excursion extended to the town's culinary delights. We had the pleasure of dining at one of its charming restaurants, Noah’s at 63 Main, where we indulged in classic New England dishes, relishing the flavors of the season. Following our delightful meal, we decided to continue our evening at the Griswold Inn Wine Bar, a must-visit spot in Essex, to enjoy a well-deserved drink in a historic and cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect culmination to a day filled with holiday spirit and shared experiences.

A Tradition to Treasure

Our annual holiday shopping trip to Essex, CT, and our stay at the River Barn, is a tradition that we hold dear. It's a reminder that in the midst of the holiday rush and the daily grind, there are moments of respite and connection to be cherished. Essex, with its timeless charm, is the perfect backdrop for our tradition, and the River Barn is the heartwarming haven that adds a touch of magic to our escape. It's a reminder that the holidays are about more than just presents; they're about the gift of shared experiences and the warmth of friendship.

River Barn welcomes Big Heart Tea to the cupboard.

It’s been almost four months since the River Barn has been welcoming guests and one thing we quickly realized is just how much we enjoy the anticipation of each stay. Whether it be a cozy couple’s getaway from the city, a birthday or anniversary celebration or just a trip to spend time with some close friends, there’s something special and unique about every single stay.

Lately, we’ve been pondering ways to contribute to the memories made at the River Barn, and one of those ways is to provide consumable products that we think our guests will really enjoy. Last month, we partnered with a local ice cream shop, Honeycone, to offer a free pint of Valentine’s Day inspired ice cream and this month we have another special treat! We’re so excited to welcome Big Heart Tea Co. to our cupboard and hope that their unique blends will be greeted with a smile and warmth during the final stretches of these cold winter days.

We’re so excited to welcome Big Heart Tea Co. to our cupboard and hope that their unique blends will be greeted with a smile and warmth during the final stretches of these cold winter days.

We chose to work with Big Heart Tea Co. because we can stand behind their brand. Big Heart Tea Co. is a St. Louis-based, woman-owned tea company on a covert mission to make people feel good with the power of healing herbs. They are always striving to do what they do better and make an effort to do the right thing on a holistic level. We love that their tea bags and box liners are non-toxic and compostable. And they refuse ingredients that aren’t traceable or coming from a place of health. Most importantly, as they have grown, they haven't backed down on putting their beliefs into action. They aren’t tacking them on as an afterthought or a hashtag. They're infused into who they are.

Big Heart Tea Co. uses 100% organic herbs in all herbal blends. Their matcha, black, green, and oolong teas are all sourced directly from small farms. They only use whole ingredients. no flavors, coloring or sweeteners added. Just whole flowers, herbs, and spices. Blends that will be available include Cup of Sunshine, Cup of Love, Blushing, Chamomile Mint, Royal Treatment and Edith Grey. If you are using social media, please tag us @riverbarnct and @bigheartteas to let us know which herb blend you like best. #riverbarnhasbigheart

We hope that every cup of Big Heart Tea that you sip during your stay brings you calm, nourishment and the much needed restoration that we all need right now.

Your Tea Loving Friend,

RB

River Barn welcomes Honeycone to our freezer.

For the month of February, we present to you “stock the freezer,” brought to you by Honeycone Craft Ice Cream. We are excited to share that all of our February guests are in for a real "sweet" treat! The barn’s freezer is stocked with Valentine's Day flavored pints of ice cream. And the best part? The first pint is on us. Flavors will include: chili chocolate, red velvet, chocolate covered strawberry, and Zinfandel (sorbet). We will also have coconut stracciatella (non dairy) and cherry vanilla (non dairy).

Welcome to our very first post on the River Barn Blog!

When we opened the barn doors to guests just over two months ago, we knew one of the most important things we wanted to do was to find ways to support our local businesses - whether it be purchasing and using their products in the barn, offering edible treats to surprise our guests or promoting our new friends’ store events on our social media channels. You will find a guide we created on our website for things to do, places to eat and drink as well as places to shop during your stay. In addition to all of this, we have been looking for the right opportunity to start collaborating with some of the best local business owners in unique ways.

Honeycone, a female-owned, mother and daughter duo, has such a fun story on how they got their start, amidst a pandemic nonetheless. And when we tell you that it’s never too cold for ice cream, we mean it. Stroll down the street in the adorable town of Chester, CT during your visit (just a 10 minute drive from the barn) and you’ll notice a line out their front door, even in the middle of February!

We look forward to hosting all of our guests this month and are excited to partner with more local businesses in the future to bring a little extra joy and excitement to your upcoming stay at the River Barn.

I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for…,
